La Maison du Chameau is composed
of 2 cottages: downstairs in the main cottage are the dining-room,
the living-room, a kitchen with fireplace, glass ceramic stove,
oven and a dish-washer and a large luxurious bathroom with a walk-in
multi-jet spa shower and an antique roll-top bathtub. Upstairs are
2 large double bedrooms. The smaller cottage has a bedroom, a bathroom
and a salon. The adjoining barn has a washing machine and a table
tennis. The vaulted wine cellar contains wine
for guests' consumption. The cottages are surrounded by a
garden, a large South-facing terrace with deck-chairs and BBQ, as
well as plenty of space and charm.
As we spent some years in Mauritania (and given the name of the
cottage), the largest bedroom is inspired by North Africa, the desert
and nomadic life and has a very inviting Oriental lounge area
As is the case in all our cottages, all the floors are red tiled,
the walls are whitewashed and there are oak beams all over.
Long Winter Lets:
This cottage is ideal for a retreat during which to write a thesis
or a book, but the many activities offered mean that it is just
as suitable for a winter away from harsher climates or a lovely
family end-of-year holiday. The fire-place in the kitchen makes
this a cosy place to spend winter months. However, the central-heating
allows you to spend time in the rest of the house as well! The winters
in the region are usually mild, with occasional snowfalls and many
hours of sunshine.
A bit of history:
One of our friends bought this cottage in Charroux
more than 10 years ago, but then left it for several years without
having any (much needed!) work done on it. As the building was not
maintained, one day the roof caved in. Over the next years, it deteriorated
even further. We talked about buying it, in order to save an old
building from total ruin. Quoting the Bible, Silva said that it
would be easier to get the proverbial camel (Chameau, in French)
through the eye of a needle, than to save this building. However,
through a long restoration process we managed to save it and it
is now back to its old improved self, and ready to receive guests.
The cottage is located in the village of Charroux, a short walking
distance from the shops and restaurants. If you wish to learn more
